Understanding Resilience
Resilience is your mental bounce-back ability — the strength to recover when things don’t go your way. It shows up when you miss a penalty, lose a big game, or deal with an injury. Instead of giving up, resilience helps you refocus, learn, and come back stronger.
Talent can get you noticed, but resilience is the superpower that keeps you going through tough times. Every footballer will face setbacks — what makes the difference is how you respond.
Handling setbacks the right way
- Feel it, but don’t stay stuck in it.
It’s normal to feel angry, upset, or disappointed when things don’t go your way. Let yourself feel it for a short while — but don’t live there. - Be clear about what hurts.
Ask yourself: is it the disappointment of not being picked? Embarrassment about telling friends? Or frustration about fairness? Once you know what’s really bothering you, it’s easier to move forward. - Focus on what you can control.
You can’t control coaches or selections, but you can control your fitness, technical skills, consistency, effort, and attitude. - Look for feedback.
Coaches or teammates might not always give it kindly, but focus on the useful info. Ask questions, listen, and build a list of areas you can work on.
Examples of resilience in action
- Cristiano Ronaldo — left home at 12, battled homesickness, but pushed through to become one of the greatest.
- Sam Kerr — tore her ACL at 19, came back fitter and stronger, and is now one of the best strikers in the world.
- Marcus Rashford — missed a crucial penalty in the Euro 2020 final, but instead of letting it crush him, he worked harder and came back sharper.
These players didn’t escape setbacks — they turned them into fuel.
How to build resilience
- Train your mind like your body — use positive self-talk and mental practice to prepare for challenges.
- See failure as a teacher — every mistake gives you feedback to grow from.
- Control the controllables — your effort, your attitude, your preparation.
- Build strong habits — journaling, breathing techniques, and setting mini-goals all build resilience over time.
