Why We Need to Fuel

Session – Why Fuelling Your Body Is Important for Training

Our bodies need a certain amount of energy every day just to stay alive — to keep our heart beating, lungs breathing, and organs functioning. This is our baseline energy need.

When we start moving, exercising, or training, our energy demands increase. The more we train, the more fuel our body needs to keep up with those demands. On top of this, during periods of growth, development, or muscle building, our bodies require even more energy and nutrients.

If we don’t eat enough, or don’t eat the right types of food, our body can’t perform properly. Low energy intake can lead to fatigue, muscle breakdown, weakened immunity, poor sleep, and a higher risk of illness and injury. Brain function can also be affected, meaning slower reactions, poorer decision-making, and changes in mood.

This directly impacts performance. We tire more quickly, struggle to run as fast, and don’t perform at our best. Proper fueling helps support training, recovery, and overall performance — allowing us to feel stronger, move better, and perform at our best.
